#ThrowbackThursday: Absolute 1999 in 99 minutes

Charli XCX might have had a big hit with “1999” last year, but she did not have the slightest idea on how it felt like to live in 1999. This playlist is a recollection of my music memories in 1999 – how Eminem was a nobody and there was more to music than Britney and Westlife.

When Charli XCX released “1999” (featuring Troye Sivan) last year, it took many millennials to their childhood years in the 1990s. I was already a teenager back then and 1999 was quite different from what Charli and Troye depicted. In 1999 I was listening to Travis a lot, as they had just released “The Man Who” and their singles were all over MTV. Unfortunately, their cassette tape had not been released in Indonesia until 3 years later.

Instead, I spent many hours listening to Pet Shop Boys’ “Nightlife”, particularly “You Only Tell Me You Love Me When You’re Drunk” and “In Denial” (duet with Kylie Minogue).

In the meantime, the world was worrying about the Y2K and Indonesia was still recovering from the unrest and the very much anticipated coup d’etat, with rumours around the kidnapping of activists were widely spread among students in my school. You could vaguely smell the anxiety in the air, and the millennium sounded more like the end of the world instead of the beginning of the future.

Anyway, instead of worrying about the future of the past, let’s just listen to the following playlist:
