#ThrowbackThursday: Fantastic Females from 1994

Before Spice Girls and All Saints there were.. Shampoo. And after all, “Girl Power” was a single by Shampoo, not Spice Girls.

“We Are Shampoo” was the first cassette tape I bought with my own pocket money, and I always considered that to be sort of historical. M People’s “Bizarre Fruit” was probably the second or third casette I bought on the same year, and I had already been fascinated by Heather Small’s distinguishing contralto the first time I saw their video on MTV Party Zone.

Apart from Shampoo and M People I was not into female vocalists or groups, and tbh hip-hop and R&B female singers had never been my cup of tea. But later in life, I realised that those singers gave quite a significant impact on 90s music, giving female artists another stage of their own.

So here they are, a playlist of significant female artists and female vocalists from 1994.
