#ThrowbackThursday 90 minutes from 1990

Back in the days when RCTI was the only private television station and “Roket” was the most anticipated TV show on weekend.

The programme gave quite a significant impact on my musical reference, with songs from Tommy Page, Phil Collins, and Janet Jackson. Gladys Suwandhi and Jeffrey Waworuntu were like the coolest hosts ever and after years of music performances a la “Aneka Ria Safari” and “Selekta Pop”, I was very much fascinated by the magical world of music videos.

Another TV programme that I always watched every week was the America’s Top 10, hosted by none other than.. Casey Kasem. This was where I used to listen to Suzanne Vega’s “Tom’s Diner”, Gloria Estefan’s “Here We Are”, and Wilson Phillips’ “Hold On”.

However, later in life I kept exploring music from the 80s and early 90s, especially when I was intensely exposed to the Manchester music scene thanks to Disco in Disguise bandmate Yudi (a #ThrowbackThursday – Manchester will be on the next post). Music videos that I had watched during high school on Classic MTV (an MTV programme on 80s and early 90s music videos) resurfaced on youtube. This includes EMF’s “Unbelievable”, Jesus Jones’ “Right Here, Right Now”, and Happy Mondays’ “Step On”.

Of course, this playlist would not be an Oxalis playlist without Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, New Order, and Depeche Mode. After all, Erasure’s “Wild!” album was probably one of the most listened-to cassette tapes I have ever had and Depeche Mode’s “Enjoy the Silence” was an absolute classic that you can never be bored of. Even when you found out that Chris Martin was wearing the same crown on Coldplay’s alternate video (Anton Corbijn’s version) of “Viva La Vida”.

ps. I have nothing against Coldplay, I just felt “Viva La Vida” was rather overrated.
