#ThrowbackThursday 90 minutes of Manchester music from the 1990s

From Northern Soul to Manchester seemed like a place to be if you were a (pop) music enthusiast in the 1990s.

Back then there were the highly-influential bands in Madchester scene like The Stone Roses, The Charlatans and Happy Mondays. Shortly after successfully bankrupting Factory Records, Happy Mondays disbanded and the almighty Shaun Ryder formed a new band, Black Grape.

New Order might have only released an album (Republic) in that decade, but their band members had their own side projects: Bernard Sumner formed a supergroup called Electronic, Peter Hook formed Monaco, the other two members Stephen Morris and Gillian Gilbert formed The Other Two. Around the same time, Marion (whose guitarist Phil Cunningham joined New Order in 2001) also released their only hit “Sleep”.

To get more insights on Madchester, the 2002 film “24 Hour Party People” is a must-watch, with Steve Coogan as Tony Wilson. Wilson was considered as the man behind the successes of Manchester bands and also founded and managed the influential club The Ha├žienda.

Speaking of The Ha├žienda, Mike Pickering used to DJ there before forming M People with Paul Heard and Heather Small.

If members of The Stone Roses were known as Manchester United fans, Mike Pickering is a Manchester City fan, just like the Gallagher brothers of Oasis.

And speaking of Oasis, Noel Gallagher’s was the vocal behind The Chemical Brothers’ “Setting Sun”.

Everybody seemed to be connected in Manchester.

ps. I had a three-hour layover on the way to Amsterdam last month and expected a sort of Manchester music vibe at the airport. Nope, it didn’t happen. All I saw were bridesmaids going to bachelorette parties and Europeans flying away from the soon-to-be-the-non-EU part of the continent.
