It was the same era with the releases of the first video game version of “Prince of Persia”, the TV series “The Adventures of Sinbad”, and the comic book “Asterix and the Magic Carpet”.
Also released in the same year was Michael Jackson’s “Remember The Time”, in an ancient Egyptian setting with Eddie Murphy and Iman as the King and Queen.
So you can sense that it really was the era of the Middle Eastern vibe. Talking about sense, it was also the year when The Lightning Seeds’ “Sense” was released. I only knew this song from their greatest hits album in 1997, and I immediately fell in love with the lyrics:
“when you’re near, it all makes sense”.
Another song which turned my head over heels was Toad The Wet Sprocket’s “All I Want”:
“All I want is to feel this way
To be this close, to feel the same”
Glen Phillips’s vocal was just insanely beautiful.
Anyway, I also went to see The Cure at Pinkpop last month and I was singing along and jumping up and down when “Friday I’m In Love” was played. Even though it was a Saturday. But anyway, Friday I’m In Love used to be my conversation opener when I was talking to someone unfamiliar with British music. If they didn’t even know this song, I would be disappointed.
..and “Disappointed” was a single by Electronic – the super band consisted of New Order’s Bernard Sumner, The Smiths’ “Johnny Marr” and featuring Pet Shop Boys’ “Neil Tennant” on vocals. I could not have asked for more.
Hopefully, the playlist will not make you feel disappointed. Although I do admit that it might not be able to take you to a whole new world. Unless you were taking LSD while listening to this.
Enjoy the playlist!
