It seems that Pet Shop Boys’ fans can have their smile of relief when this album was finally released. After two years of absence – and even the previous album was actually a compilation album ‘Back to Mine’ – ‘Fundamental’ is the album which marked the return of Pet Shop Boys to international music.
In this album the duo of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe were back to their roots: 12 songs of upbeat disco, with some bits of ballads with Tennant’s distinguishing lyrics. All were well covered with synthesizer accompaniment and deep with the touch of 80’s music. This atmosphere was of course, very much ‘Pet Shop Boys’, especially after the duo once ‘drifted’ to a more pop sounds filled with guitar a la Johnny Marr on the album ‘Release’.
The 80’s atmosphere was perhaps influenced by the producer Trevor Horn, who has been in British music industry since the 80s. Horn was the one who responsible to some of the hit albums in that decade, including those by Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Simple Minds, and ABC.
And just like the black cover album, the album is somehow darker and close to nightlife, although unlike the 1998 album “Nightlife”, which felt more like techno thanks to Faithless’s Rollo and Sister Bliss.
“Psychological” which opens the album seemed to be the right option to take the listeners to the world of Pet Shop Boys, the band who had existed in the disco-pop genre since 1982. The next songs have a similar tone, like “The Sodom and Gomorrah Show”, “Minimal”, and “I’m With Stupid”, which was chosen to be their first single.
Yet for those who like the softer side of Pet Shop Boys, can still enjoy “Luna Park”, “I Made My Excuses and Left” (which slightly sounds like “The Night I Fell in Love” on ‘Release’, and Diane Warren’s “Numb”.
From the lyrics, Tennant’s way in writing was still similar to their previous albums. Still ‘gay’ish, or telling the life of gay people – from various point of views, either subject, object, or merely an observer. This album also tells more about political problems, from terrorism, British politics, and the bilateral cooperation of UK and US.
Overall, this album is a MUST for their fans. An album to take the disco-pop/synth-pop lovers to a great nostalgia, yet in the same time refreshes us with explorative sounds.
PS: In the limited edition ‘Fundamentalism’ you can find a nicely done collaboration between Pet Shop Boys and Elton John in the song “In Private”. This upbeat – somehow cheerful – song has somehow a mischievous lyric. A married man who has an affair with a gay man. Now that’s what I call a ‘creative’ idea to make a lyric – haha. Hail to Tennant!!

Sepertinya penggemar setia Pet Shop Boys dapat tersenyum lega ketika album ini akhirnya dirilis. Setelah hampir dua tahun tidak mengeluarkan album – dan album sebelumnya pun sebetulnya adalah album kompilasi ‘Back To Mine’ – ‘Fundamental’ menjadi album yang menandakan kembalinya Pet Shop Boys ke kancah musik internasional.
Dalam album ini duo Neil Tennant dan Chris Lowe kembali ke akar mereka, 12 lagu penuh dengan disco beat yang cukup menghentak, diselilingi beberapa lagu ballads dengan lirik khas ciptaan Neil Tennant. Semuanya dibalut apik dengan iringan synthesizer dan aransemen yang kental dengan musik 80-an. Nuansa seperti ini tentu terdengar sangat ‘Pet Shop Boys’, setelah sempat ‘melacur’ ke musik yang lebih pop dan penuh petikan gitar ala Johnny Marr di album ‘Release’.
Atmosfer 80-an memang sangat terasa dalam album yang dirilis bulan Mei 2006 ini. Hal tersebut sedikit banyak mungkin mendapat pengaruh dari produsernya Trevor Horn, yang telah lama malang melintang di dunia musik Inggris di tahun 80-an. Horn-lah yang bertanggung jawab dengan kesuksesan beberapa album yang menjadi hits di dasawarsa itu, antara lain milik Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Simple Minds, dan ABC.
Selain itu, seperti halnya sampul albumnya yang hitam, album ini juga terkesan lebih gelap dan dekat dengan kehidupan malam, walaupun tidak seperti ‘Nightlife’ yang cenderung bernuansa ‘techno’ akibat terkena sentuhan Rollo dan Sister Bliss dari band Faithless.
“Psychological” sebagai lagu pembuka dari album ini menjadi pilihan tepat yang mengantarkan pendengarnya ke dunia Pet Shop Boys, band yang telah eksis di dunia disco-pop sejak tahun 1982 itu. Lagu-lagu berikutnya memiliki nuansa yang tidak jauh berbeda, seperti “The Sodom and Gommorah Show”, “Minimal”, dan “I’m With Stupid”, yang dipilih menjadi single pertama mereka.
Namun bagi mereka yang lebih menyukai sisi lembut Pet Shop Boys, masih dapat menikmatinya di lagu-lagu seperti “Luna Park”, “I Made My Excuses and Left” (yang sepintas mirip dengan “The Night I Fell in Love” di album ‘Release’), dan “Numb”, lagu gubahan Diane Warren.
Sayangnya di album ini alur lagu-lagunya cenderung sangat fluktuatif. Di antara kedua lagu yang cukup pelan, “Minimal” dan “Luna Park”, duo asal London, Inggris ini sempat-sempatnya menyelipkan cuplikan musik dengan beat disco melalui “God Willing”. Atau setelah mulai ‘pendinginan’ di “Indefinite Leave to Remain” pendengar kembali dikejutkan dengan “Integral”, misalnya.
Sementara itu secara lirik, kekuatan merangkai kata-kata yang dilakukan oleh Tennant masih tidak jauh berbeda dari album-album sebelumnya. Masih banyak menceritakan kehidupan kaum gay, dan ditulis dari berbagai sisi; baik dari sisi pelaku, penderita, ataupun orang ketiga yang sekedar menjadi pengamat kejadian. Album ini juga membicarakan masalah yang lebih politis, seperti terorisme, politik dalam negeri, hingga hubungan bilateral Inggris-AS.
Secara keseluruhan, album ini menjadi album wajib bagi para penggemarnya. Album yang bisa dijadikan pengantar nostalgia para pecinta musik disco-pop/synth-pop, namun di saat yang sama dapat memberi suatu penyegaran dengan sound-sound mereka yang eksploratif.
